What is the Porto's Opera Cake?

Opera cake is a French classic built from thin layers of coffee-soaked sponge, buttercream and chocolate.

Porto's version uses an almond sponge soaked in coffee, layered with mocha buttercream and dark chocolate ganache with a touch of brandy.

It's finished with a thin chocolate glaze, dark chocolate decor and a chocolate-covered coffee bean on top.

Opera Cake calories and nutrition

Ingredients and allergens

Porto's describes the Opera Cake as made with:

  • Coffee-soaked almond sponge cake
  • Mocha buttercream
  • Dark chocolate ganache with a touch of brandy
  • Chocolate glaze
  • Dark chocolate decor
  • Chocolate-covered coffee bean

Porto's doesn't publish an allergen chart. From its own description, the Opera Cake contains:

  • Tree nuts, from the almond sponge.
  • Milk, from the buttercream and ganache.
  • Wheat, from the sponge cake.
  • Egg, sponge cake is made with eggs.

We can't confirm anything beyond that. Porto's kitchens handle nuts, dairy, wheat and meat, so tell the counter about any allergy before you order.

Coffee, brandy and almonds

Three things in this slice catch people out.

The sponge is soaked in coffee and there's a coffee bean on top, so it has some caffeine. The ganache has a touch of brandy. And the sponge is made with almonds.

If you're serving kids, avoiding alcohol or dealing with a nut allergy, the Napoleon Slice is a safer pick from the same case.
